A community foundation is a philanthropic organization that manages charitable funds with a broad base of donors to benefit a specific geographic area—in our case, Dubois County. Founded in 1996 as a public charitable foundation, the Dubois County Community Foundation works with donors, nonprofits and professional advisors to help strengthen our community through strategic philanthropy and charitable giving. By connecting the passions of donors with the purposes of nonprofits, we help Dubois County prosper. Dubois County Community Foundation is built on the belief that everyone can give back. STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
The Community Foundation's support for our community is broad-based, but we are committed to priority focus areas that address our community's most pressing needs. Since 2020, we have prioritized increasing access to services for mental health and substance use disorders—a commitment that continues through 2026.
In 2024, we began assessing our community’s childcare and early learning needs in greater depth. This effort led to the launch of a community initiative aimed at expanding access to high-quality, affordable early education.

HISTORY
Over 25 years ago, a public charitable foundation emerged in Dubois County with a clear vision to strengthen community through collective charitable giving. The idea to start a community foundation originated when three community members – lawyer John S. Chappell, the late Anthony P. “Tony” Habig and then City of Jasper Mayor, William Schmitt, began thinking about it independent of one another. By the mid 1990’s, they were sharing their vision, and consensus began building more broadly in the community. Dubois County Community Foundation, Inc. officially incorporated on August 1, 1996. Our founders’ vision acted as a catalyst for change that has surpassed the expectations of many. In 25 years, we’ve distributed over $14 million in grants and hold over $60 million in protected, charitable assets. Learn more about our history here.
